SPECULATIVE CONCLUSIONS
As noted earlier, the two charts illustrated below represent the most commonly held view of the Sumner/Russwurm connection. (Some pedigree charts show an Alvin Russwurm as the father of William and John. We have found no evidence to support this claim.)
We believe both of these charts are flawed and incorrect.

From the evidence we have gathered we believe:
Francis Russwurm of Nansemond married a Sarah Sumner, sister of General Jethro Sumner.
They had three boys, Jethro, William Alexander, and John, prior to Francis' death in 1773.
Jethro being named after his Uncle and Grandfather on the Sumner side.
Jethro and William Alexander served in the Revolutionary War and John moved to Jamaica.
William Alexander married a Eleanor Gosnell whose family name was Shaw (not Sumner).
William and Eleanor had three children, William Alexander, John Sumner and Mary.
The "Sumner" in John's name coming through his father's connection to that family. not his mother's. His grandmother being Sarah Sumner.
